Trinidad & Tobago Strikes Gold at the World Masters Indoor Championships! 🇹🇹

Trinidad and Tobago’s veteran athletes showed up and showed out recently at the World Masters Indoor Championships in Florida, bringing home some serious hardware. Leading the charge were our incredible throwers, Gwendolyn Smith and Geraldine George, who both struck gold!

Here are the highlights from an action-packed meet:

Golden Girls in the Throwing Events Gwendolyn Smith absolutely dominated the Women’s 60-64 javelin, capturing the world title with a spectacular 36.87-metre throw. She didn’t stop there, bagging a silver in the shot put (12.64m), alongside solid finishes in the weight throw (10th) and discus (13th).

Geraldine George matched that golden energy in the Women’s 50-54 javelin, taking the top spot with a 35.41m effort! George also delivered strong performances across the board, finishing 6th in both the shot put and discus, and 12th in the weight throw.

(Fun fact: Even though this was the World Indoors meet, the javelin, discus, and hammer throw events were actually contested outdoors under the Florida sun!)

T&T Pride on the Track and Field The rest of the T&T contingent fought hard in their respective events:

  • Raymond Smith: Narrowly missed the finals in the Men’s 65-69 60m dash, finishing 9th overall with a brisk 8.45 seconds (after an 8.41s in the opening round). He also placed 10th in the 200m semis.

  • Noelyn Toby-Davis: Threw her way to 8th in the Women’s 60-64 discus (21.33m) and 14th in the shot put.

  • Philbert Ryce: Clocked a speedy 7.60 seconds to automatically advance from his Men’s 50-54 60m preliminary heat, though he later opted out of the semi-finals.

Familiar Faces Shining Bright We also saw stellar performances from former T&T athletes now representing other nations:

  • Two-time T&T Olympian Marsha Mark-Baird (now competing for the USA) had a phenomenal meet. She took silver right behind George in the 50-54 javelin with a 35.27m throw, and walked away with four medals in total—including golds in the indoor pentathlon and long jump!

  • Inga Hope-McIntyre (USA) grabbed gold running the leadoff leg for the American 4x200m relay team, and finished 5th in both the 60m and 200m finals.

  • Curtis Brereton (Grenada) hit the track for the distance events, placing 24th in the 1,500m and 29th overall in the 3,000m.

A massive congratulations to all the athletes who competed and kept the T&T flag flying high!
